Patina

The white ”patina” of silver responsible for much of its aesthetic appeal becomes more pronounced with age due to the optical effect of the multitude of very fine scratches that develop in use. 

On new highly polished silverware, the few fine isolated scratches that first appear tend to be somewhat conspicuous until the white patina has fully developed.

The collections offer perfect stand-alone ranges, but can also be layered with other collections, enabling new looks for every meal, from colorful brunch to the most sophisticated evening look.

Marie Daâge collections are some of the very last to be painted entirely by hand as opposed to printed patterns. The resulting pieces represent a rare combination of fine Limoges porcelain,  patterned not with the usual rigid decorative motifs but with playful and expressive hand-painting. Each piece is a unique piece of art.

• A Mouleton protects the table from hot dishes and spills and makes the table more comfortable and stable for the diners by reducing the noise level

• A Tablecloth sits over the mouleton. Some tablecloths are ornamental. Others only serve to protect the table from scratches and stains.

          Tablecloths have an ‘overhang’ or ‘drop’.
          For casual dining a short drop 20-40 cm is normal.
          For formal dining a longer drop is usual. Sometimes going up to the floor.

• An Overlay sits on top of the tablecloth and dresses your tablescape with an additional layer of color and texture.

         Overlays are traditionally square. Shape them to suit your requirement.
         They are designed to match the tablescape.

• Placemats can be of fabric, leather or other materials. Simple or very ornamental and elegant. They are sized to accommodate the chinaware, cutlery and glassware used by the individual diner.
  In casual dining a table runner and placemats are often used without a tablecloth.

• Runner is a kind of very narrow tablecloth which sits in the centre of the table and generally overhangs the table at two ends only.

• Napkins are soft, absorbent, feel good are easy on the lips and the sensitive area around the mouth. They need to be very washable as food can leave all sorts of stains on them.

Inkerman Silver has a unique self-contained manufacturing facility that no other Sheffield cutlery manufacturer can offer with it’s in-house cabinet making, cutlery stamping, toolmaking, polishing, silver & gold plating divisions.

Although the silverware is handcrafted with each piece touched by a human hand no less than 36 times through its processes, Inkerman uses the latest technology and machinery alongside this to bring great silverware to their customer’s table. A purpose-built factory is on the drawing board at this time.

Foods require to be served in specific styles and shapes of platters and dishes. Some foods need to be kept warm and so require thermic containers or food warmers.

Flatware and holloware have to be selected prudently to suit the occasion and the food being served, with everything well placed and at hand.

When used for wine, a stem allows you to hold the glass without warming the wine and it makes it much easier to swirl the wine.

Commonly used glasses are…

• Red Wine Glass – These need to have a larger, rounder bowl to swirl the wine easily and help aerate it. This let’s the aromas escape easier and gives the wine more aromatic complexity.
• White Wine Glass – These are smaller than red wine glasses. The small bowl preserves and concentrates floral aromas, heighten’s the wine’s intensity and helps maintain a cooler temperature.
  Full-bodied whites like a Chardonnay are served in a glass with a bowl smaller than a red wine glass but larger than a light-bodied white wine glass.
• Flute or champagne Glass is designed to consume Champagne and sparkling and fizzy wines.
• Cocktail Glass is a stemmed glass with an inverted cone bowl, mainly used to serve straight-up cocktails. Also used as a martini glass at times.
• Highball Glass is used to serve tall cocktails and other mixed drinks that contain a large proportion of a non-alcoholic mixer, poured over ice.
  Often interchanged with the Collins glass,the highball glass is shorter and wider in shape than a Collins glass.
• Lowball or Old Fashioned Glass is used to serve mixed drinks that are primarily alcohol mixed with sugar, bitters and liqueurs for flavor.
• Irish Coffee Glass is primarily used for serving Irish Coffees. It is made from clear glass, has a handle and a squat stem and base.
• Hurricane Glass is used to serve mixed drinks of the style of the Hurricane which typically amount to approximately 590 ml.

Cutlery can be handcrafted to a high finish with special 3D designs and badge markings or can be machine made very cheaply.

There are different knives, forks, spoons and implements to eat certain types of sea-foods and meats. A complete cutlery set includes all regular dining implements.
